Study of Ancient and Modern Objects
The minerals, plants and objets d'art at the Göttingen Academic Museum inspired scholars such as Johann Friedrich Blumenbach to study new fields of research. At that time, as in the present, objects were acquired specially for research purposes. However, even long-standing objects continue to yield new and surprising results. Thanks to modern research methods, they once again become a springboard for innovative research.
Today the wide variety of objects and the thematic breadth of the Göttingen collections enable research into evolution and biodiversity as well into subjects like ethnology, archaeology, music, art and the history of science. The particulars on many of the objects are stored in online databases and thus become part of a worldwide, virtual research infrastructure.
