On Searching, Finding and Keeping
Academic collections are arranged according to rigorous and systematic criteria. Nonetheless, the individual collectors have put their personal stamp on them. They devoted particular attention to special areas of acquisition, concentrating their collecting activities on hitherto unnoticed or ignored aspects.
Collectors bought objects, received gifts or had models custommade for their collections. Minerals, plants and animals were mostly taken from nature. Archaeological finds excavated at digs were discovered and ended up in collections. Ethnological items were often bartered or appropriated by violent means. Some of the conventional acquisition methods of the past are now subject to international bans or strict regulations.
